Welcome to Clay Target Shooting in the ACT !

As the Majura Park Gun Club (MPGC) is situated in the Sporting Shooters Association Australia (SSAA) ACT complex, we require all MPGC members to join SSAA.

2. The completed form must be submitted in person. Bring your completed form with you to the club on any Wednesday night between 5 pm and 8:30 pm. EFTPOS is available at the club.  When payment is processed a receipt will be issued to you.

3. You will need to bring your firearms licence (if applicable).  You will also be required to show proof of SSAA membership in the form of a current membership card or receipt for the payment of membership fees.  Once this information is verified and your membership is endorsed by the administrative staff you will be then issued with an MPGC membership card with your membership number and membership type on it.

4. Now it’s time to get out and shoot some clays!

Down The Line

When is DTL shot ?

MPGC has DTL layouts open for practice on Wednesday afternoons followed by competition (under lights). We also have a monthly competition on the first Sunday of the month (excluding January) – see our calendar for details.

How is DTL Shot?

Using a ‘shoot and move’ chain method the competitor moves to their right after taking their turn. The competitor on lane 1 will call “Pull” for a target and attempt to shoot it. Usually six competitors take part one after another. They all then circulate around to the next lane and continue until five targets have been scored at across the five lanes (shooting positions). The individual has 10 seconds from the time the previous competitor completes their shot to take their own shot.

5 Main Sub Events

• Double Barrel: the shooter is permitted to take two shots at the clay target with a hit scored as 1 regardless of if it was hit on the first or second shot.

• Single Barrel: competitors are permitted only one shot at each clay target.

• Point Score: the shooter is permitted to take two shots at each clay target.  If they hit the target on their first shot they will receive a score of 3 points and if they hit it on the second shot they will score 2 points. 

• Handicap: shooters compete at different distances from the trap machine.  The distances vary from 15m to 25m. Individual handicap distances reflect the shooters competency from previous Handicap Events or from their general grading competency (AA down to C Grade).  Shooters are permitted to take two shots at the clay target with a hit scored as 1 regardless of if it was hit on the first or second shot.

• Double Rise: shooters are presented with 2 targets simultaneously.  Shooters are scored one point for each target broken.

Ammunition

A maximum lead load of 28 grams in shot size 7.5 is the most used ammunition for DTL. Some trap shooters prefer a smaller shot (e.g. size of 8) for their first barrel. Most cartridges have a speed between 1150 to 1350 feet per second. Handicap events demand different ammunition depending on the shooters distance from the trap machine.  Shooters are permitted up to 32 gram loads to contest Handicap events.

When is Ball Trap shot ?

How is Ball Trap Shot?

Using a ‘shoot and move’ chain method the competitor moves to their right after taking their turn. The competitor on lane 1 will call “Pull” for a target and attempt to shoot it. Usually six competitors take part one after another. They all then circulate around to the next lane and continue until five targets have been scored at across the five lanes (shooting positions). The individual has 10 seconds from the time the previous competitor completes their shot to take their own shot. 

Ammunition

A maximum lead load of 28 grams in shot size 7.5 is the most used ammunition for Ball Trap. Ball Trap shooters may select ammunition with higher speeds.

Universal Trench

When is UT shot ?

Universal Trench competition is shot on the 2nd Wednesday night of every month.

How is UT Shot?

Using a ‘shoot and move’ chain method the competitor moves to their right after taking their turn. The competitor on lane 1 will call “Pull” for a target and attempt to shoot it. Usually six competitors take part one after another. They all then circulate around to the next lane and continue until five targets have been scored at across the five lanes (shooting positions). The individual has 10 seconds from the time the previous competitor completes their shot to take their own shot. 

Each round of Universal Trench consists of 25 single targets with two shots allowed at the target. Scoring is based on a single point being awarded for each hit, regardless of whether it was the first or second shot.

When a shooter calls for a target it will be released immediately from one of a group of five traps. The competitors do not know which trap will be triggered, and therefore which target they will receive, which gives the feeling of a random selection of targets. To insure fairness, each Universal Trench layout is based on a ‘scheme’ which is controlled by a computer. This means that, although the sequence of the targets will be different for each competitor, they will all receive the same targets by the end of the 25-target round.

Ammunition

Universal Trench must be shot with cartridges that have a maximum load of 28g and shot size no greater than 2.5mm. Shooters typically select cartridges with the speed of more than 1250fps.

Olympic Trap

When is OT shot ?

Olympic Trap competition are shot on the 3rd Sunday every month (excluding winter) – see our calendar for details.

How is OT Shot?

Olympic Trap is shot Using a ‘shoot and move’ chain method the competitor moves to their right after taking their turn. The competitor on lane 1 will call “Pull” for a target and attempt to shoot it. Usually six competitors take part one after another. They all then circulate around to the next shooting position and continue until five targets have been scored at across the five lanes (shooting positions). The individual has 12 seconds from the time the previous competitor completes their shot to take their own shot. 

Each round of Universal Trench consists of 25 single targets with two shots allowed at the target. Scoring is based on a single point being awarded for each hit, regardless of whether it was the first or second shot.

At Majura Park our competitions are normally shot over four rounds making a total score out of 100.

When a competitor calls for a target it will be released immediately from one of a group of three traps directly in front of the competitor’s stand. The competitors do not know which trap will be triggered. To insure fairness, each Olympic Trap layout is based on a ‘scheme’ that is controlled by a computer. This means that, although the sequence of the targets will be different for each competitor, they will all receive the same targets by the end of the round. Two left targets, one straight away, and right targets from each station.

As with all Olympic disciplines, Olympic Trap 24 g and shot size no greater than 2.6mm. Typically competitors select a faster shell (1300+ fps) and 7.5 shot.

American Skeet

When is Skeet shot ?

American Skeet is shot as practice every Wednesday between 1 pm to 3 pm.

How is Skeet Shot?

American Skeet is shot using a “gun up” or “gun down” style.  Target sequence are as follows.

Station 1

• Single from the High House
• Single from the Low House
• Double – High House target to be shot first.

Station 2

• Single from the High House
• Single from the Low House
• Double – High House target to be shot first.

Station 3

• Single from the High House
• Single from the Low House

Station 4

• Single from the High House
• Single from the Low House

Station 5

• Single from the High House
• Single from the Low House

Station 6

• Single from the High House
• Single from the Low House
• Double – Low House target to be shot first.

Station 7

• Single from the Low House
• Single from the High House
• Double – Low House target to be shot first.

Station 8

• Single from the High House

• Single from the Low House

You must shoot the clay before it gets to the centre.

 

Ammunition

28 grams 9 shot is the most commonly used ammunition.

 

Olympic Skeet

When is OS shot ?

Olympic Skeet is only occasionally shot at MPGC.

How is OS Shot?

Olympics Skeet is a shot using the “gun down” style and the shooting sequence can be found at the official ISSF Rules Page.

Ammunition

All Olympic disciplines only allow up to a maximum load of 24 grams of shot and shot size no greater than 2.6mm. Typically competitors select a faster shell (1300+ fps) and 9 size shot.

Sporting

When is Sporting shot ?

100 target Sporting Clays competitions are shot on the fourth Sunday of every month – see our calendar for details.

How is Sporting Shot?

Shoots are conducted in “Squads” (your shooting group for the day) of up to 6 shooters and you will be together for the duration of shooting on that day. Your squad will progress around the course to complete the set number of targets for each round of the competition. Competitions are typically 75 to 100 targets. Multiple day events are available over 150, 200, or even 300 targets.

Target presentations in Sporting vary using the following sequence mixes.

  • Single

The competitor can fire both barrels at the one target.

  • Report Pairs

The competitor calls for the first target and the second is released on the “report” of the competitors first shot.

  • Simultaneous Pairs

Both targets are released at the same time.

  • Following “Rafael” Pairs

The second target is released at a fixed interval after the first target, irrespective of when the competitor fires at the first target.

The layout and design of the Sporting Clays grounds depends on the objectives of the course setter, using the terrain and different target sizes and designs to provide each course with its own unique challenges.

Ammunition

This depends on what Federation the competition is being shot under. SSAA 5 Stand has a maximum load of 32 grams compared with SCA which has a maximum load of 28 grams. Shot sizes depend on the individual but generally a shooter may use a mix of shells for different types of targets. With closer targets being shot with 9’s or 8’s and medium and long-range targets being shot with 7.5’s or 7’s

5 Stand

When is 5 Stand shot?

5 Stand competition are shot on every 4th Wednesday night of the month (under lights). Practice is available all other Wednesday nights – see our calendar for details.

How 5 Stand is Shot?

5 Stand is a fast-paced discipline with 6 to 12 traps that are shot in a round robin fashion by a squad of shooters from five different positions “stands or cages”, arranged in a line separated by 1 to 5 metres.  Target sequences will vary between stands and may include the targets flight paths explained below.

  • Incoming – targets will come towards the shooters position
  • Overhead – targets that will pass over the shooters position
  • Quartering – targets moving across the shooters position from various angles.
  • Springing – targets going straight up in front of the shooters position
  • Looping – targets thrown in a looping manner at 90 degrees to the shooting position
  • Rabbit – a specialised target thrown on its edge along the ground
  • Battue – a specialised target designed to turn when it reaches the peak of its flight.

FAQ

Yes, please contact us with your ideas.

We specialise in clay target shooting only.

• Singlets, thongs, and camouflage are prohibited on the range. 

• Flat close-toe shoes must be worn at all times.   

• We recommend you bring hats and sunglasses in warmer weather.

• In the colder months try to dress warmly, however, bulky jackets with big collars are discouraged as they make it difficult to mount the shotgun into the shoulder correctly.

• If you wear corrective lenses for distance bring them with you as they can be beneficial to you during the activity.

• Yes you can come in fancy dress for the Buck or Hen party.

Yes, however we do not accept AMEX.

 

• Shotguns are to remain unloaded and in the open position at all times except when on the lanes preparing to shoot.

• ALL individuals on the grounds are to sign the attendance book on arrival.

• It is the shooters responsibility to know what squad they are in and be on the lanes at the time of round commencement.

We specialise in clay target shooting. Please direct any inquiries regarding rifles or pistols shooting to SSAA ACT. 

Our Olympic Trap layout has a roof so don’t worry about the weather we will always try our best to accommodate beginner session bookings, where possible. Note there may be some delays as the squads move slightly slower in the wet. We encourage you to wear weather appropriate clothing so you are as comfortable as possible during your experience.
